I have been wanting to write this blog post for more than 15 years! Ever since I started presenting word-for-word Scripture – over 20 years ago – people have been asking me when I’m going to record an audio Bible. I am thrilled to announce that I have signed an agreement to record one! (Can I get a “Praise Jesus!”?)
There are so many reasons I am excited to create The Storyteller’s Audio Bible. Here are the Top 5:
Reason 1: The Translation Is Outstanding!
I will be using the Christian Standard Bible, a brand-new translation that just came out in 2017. While there are several really good translations for all reading levels (I wrote about that here.), I have mainly gone back and forth between the New International Version (the one I grew up on) and the English Standard Version (one of the fastest growing translations out there).
A year ago, a friend asked me if I had checked out the new Christian Standard Bible and said they were giving away copies to pastors and people in vocational ministry. I checked out their site, found the CSB was put out by Holman Bible Publishers (a division of LifeWay Christian Resources and the oldest Bible publisher in North America) and sent them an email. A few weeks later a beautiful, leather-bound Bible showed up on my mailbox.
I decided to use the CSB for my 2018 Rapid Bible Read Thru. And I love it!
I will write an entire blog post on the CSB in the near future, but for now, here’s what you need to know: The CSB is the best “middle ground” I have ever seen for the readability of the NIV and the word-for-word accuracy of the ESV. You’re going to love it!
Reason 2: They Let Me Make a Simple – but HUGE – Change!
I have been using audio Bibles (as a supplement to reading…not a replacement) for a very long time. My biggest pet peeve is that the narrator always interrupts the narrative to say “The Gospel of John, Chapter 5” and then continues. It seems like a little thing, but from a storytelling perspective, it takes the listener OUT of the story! I have even heard several audio Bibles that include the section headings. Ugh!
The audio Bible I am recording will simply have “The Gospel of John” or “Philippians” at the beginning of a book. The rest will be the entire book in one, continuous, immersive reading!
NOTE: I will have track marks at the beginning of each chapter so you can easily find different chapters as you listen. I also haven’t decided what I’m going to do about Psalms and Proverbs, since those are more “stand alone” in nature.
Reason 3: I Can Put My “Style” On It!
Every storyteller has their own style. I am no different. (OK…people who know me well say I’m actually quite “different,” but that’s another story for another day!)
The folks at LifeWay have said I can record it here in Seattle and I can put my personal style into the reading. Obviously, I won’t be changing the text at all, but I have freedom to infuse the passion, energy, and emotion I strive to bring to every live presentation into this audio Bible.
Reason 4: I Can Release It In Phases!
Recording and producing an entire audio Bible will take hundreds of hours. I was hoping they would give me some flexibility to release it in phases. I was thrilled – and a bit surprised – when they said, “Yes.”
My goal is to get the New Testament out by Christmas! (That was a little scary to put in writing!)
Reason 5: I Get to Reach Way More People!
I am humbled and honored that God allows me to share my Biblical storytelling in front of thousands of people every year. But there are millions of people I will never share with in a live presentation. I want to bring the Word to life for as many people as possible!
The Storyteller’s Audio Bible will allow me to share God’s Living Word with limitless people. I hope YOU will help me do exactly that!
Are you excited too?
