A 4-year-old kid almost died, went to heaven, and told his folks about it. That’s the gist of Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back. Truth be told, my wife made me read it. She read it, handed it to me, and said, “Read it. You’ll like it.” Well…she was right.
As I read, she would occasionally ask me if I was skeptical. I would say “Of course. Shouldn’t we be when we read of people making claims of visiting heaven?!” I am still not quite sure whether I believe every detail of the story. That said…I am fully convinced that the Burpo family believes it. And the way they talk about it is encouraging, thought-provoking, humble, God-honoring – and quite simply – good storytelling. (I’m always up for a well-told story.)
Some people will look to this book to answer questions they have about heaven. Some will have a greater peace about “what happens next.” Some will develop a deeper awareness of God in the everyday-ness of life. And some – though not many – will pass it off as a little kid who had a weird dream while in the hospital. I put it down and want to live more fully here and I have an increased anticipation of the life to come.
Thanks for making me read it Kari.
