Last week I wrote about five verses from 1 John I’m pondering. Truth be told, I had to narrow it down to those five. The more I think about it the more I wanted to share the other ones that have been hitting me.
In case you missed last week’s post, you’ll want to start here (for some background).
Now let’s take a look at one more verse from each chapter…
1 John 1:6
If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” NIV
This whole verse (and paragraph for that matter) is powerful. Lots to chew on.
However, the part that gets me is “…live out the truth.” We talk a lot about knowing the truth. Not as much about living out the truth. Seems like living it out is a tad more important than knowing it.
1 John 2:5-6
But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” NIV
I admit it. This one might be on my mind because it goes hand-in-hand with the last one. Claiming to live in Jesus and living like Jesus are two different things.
And the world can tell the difference.
1 John 3:16-18
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” NIV
New paragraph. Same message. Either say it AND live it, or stop talking.
1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” NIV
If we’re going to live it – rather than just say it – we need some help. We all need help. You do. I do.
Thankfully, the One Jesus himself referred to as “The Helper” resides within you and me.
And you know that person, mistake, or attitude you’ve been struggling with? (Yup. That one.) The Helper who lives in you is greater. Much, much greater.
1 John 5:11-12
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” NIV
Too often, we make it our mission – or dare I say, our obligation – to convince people of who Jesus is and what He’s done.
Hear this clearly, my friend: It’s not your job to convince people to believe in Jesus.
Our job is to point people to Jesus. They don’t need to just believe in Him. They need to know Him. They need to be in His presence. They need to experience His love, grace, mercy, compassion, and power.
They need Jesus…not knowledge about Jesus. They need to eat the Bread of Life…not learn a bread recipe.
As I said last week…Read. Ponder. Pray. Live. Repeat.
