2 Different Views on What It Means to Take a Sabbath

Do you take a Sabbath? Weekly? A couple times a month? A yearly extended Sabbath? A few half-days here and there?

I ask because it seems to be coming up a LOT in conversation these days. I’ve seen bloggers write about it, pastors speak about it, and all kinds of people posting about it on social media.

The other day, I received two emails within less than an hour about taking a Sabbath. Both had very different takes.

One I loved. The other I agreed with two of her three points. The third point I strongly disagreed with!

Then I recorded this…

What is your take on the Sabbath? Do you practice it? How? What’s the benefit?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

NOTE: Here’s the blog post I mention in the video.

Keith, I find it interesting that you note Sabbath is throughout Scripture. It is also the first covenant made with man; 6 days you shall work and on the 7th you shall rest. Why not follow the “Sabbath recipe” that God already gave us? Why try to reinvent the wheel? We as believers have no trouble obeying “Do not murder.” Or “Do not steal.” Why do believers have such a hard time with “Honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy?” Just for reference, I follow all of Scripture to the best of my ability, including Sabbath and feast days.

Really enjoyed your video and thoughts on Sabbath. It’s funny because I blogged about Sabbath this week too, particularly because we are getting ready for a two week vacation. It’s not a very long post if you want to check it out, I’d love to know what you think.

I do plan to check personal email occasionally while we travel but work email? No way!

Thanks for your ministry and resources. I enjoy following you.

Oh the elusive sabbath rest…I just listened to Emily’s podcast last week where she discusses “keeping” the sabbath rather than “taking” the Sabbath. This was a ‘take’ I hadn’t heard before. ;). Thanks for keeping the Sabbath in front of us and giving us some tools to protect it.

Hey Robin. I love that idea of “keeping” the Sabbath. Thanks for pointing me toward Emily’s podcast. I’ll have to check it out.
