Have you ever typed “online Bible study tools” into Google or Bing? If so, you probably did what most people do – checked out the first one or two, and never got any further. (By the way, I just did and there were 14.8 million results on Bing and 21.8 million on Google.)
Over the last decade or so I have looked at literally hundreds of sites and apps. Translations, commentaries, word studies, maps, summaries, timelines, audio Bibles. You name it – I’ve looked at it.
I have narrowed it down to my “Top 10.” The ten sites and apps I actually use. The coolest thing is that all of them are free! (Yup. Not kidding.) As a handy-dandy reference, I have put them all into my newest eBook.
“My Top 10 Online Bible Study Tools
(and they’re all FREE)”
The tools are free. The eBook is also free. Simply click the picture of the cover (or click here).

In today’s episode, I share the first five of my “Top 10.” I look at how I actually use them, what makes them unique, and my favorite feature of each.
[callout]NOTE: I’m not going to go into great detail here. If you are a reader, you’ve probably just downloaded the eBook. If you’re a listener, I go into lots more detail on the podcast. [/callout]
Main Topic: The first 5 of my Top 10 Online Bible Study Tools.
1. Bible Gateway
You know it as “the website with a ton of different Bible translations and languages.” True. But it is so much more.
Did you know there’s an app for your smartphone and tablet? Did you know there are commentaries, devotionals, and a free audio Bible?
Here’s where you can find it: www.BibleGateway.com
2. Bible Study Tools
This site – and yes, there’s also an app – is incredibly robust. It has one of the most powerful keyword/topic searches I have found. Search on any keyword or topic and it divides the results into four “tabs” (Bible, References, Bible Study, and Pastors).
Here’s where you can find it: www.BibleStudyTools.com
Most people know the smartphone app, but few know that YouVersion has a website that completely synchronizes all of your notes, highlights, etc. between all your devices.
The best thing – in my humble opinion – about YouVersion is the integrated audio Bible. Find the passage. Tap the icon. Listen. I use it all the time in my car. Lovely.
Here’s where you can find it: www.YouVersion.com
If you ever thought, “Hey. I wish there was a forum where I could ask any question about the Bible, faith, life, etc. and get a lot of answers pretty quickly” then eBible is for you! Their online Q&A forum is the most active I’ve seen.
They also have some really cool resources for churches, ministries, and bloggers including an embeddable Bible (the whole Bible, right on your site) and VerseLink (every Bible reference automatically becomes a link to the passage).
Here’s where you can find it: www.eBible.com
5. Bible Hub
This website is unbelievably robust. Two really cool features are their Timeline of the whole Bible and the Summaries of each book of the Bible.
There’s no mobile app, but there is a dedicated mobile site. (Reading this on your phone or tablet? Click here.

Listener Question (Listen at 24:19)
I’m doing a Bible Read Thru. How do I stick with it for the long haul and finish this time?”
I give three ideas to help with this one. Here’s the short version:
- Read for an amount of time, not an amount of content.
- Meet weekly with a few others to chat about what you’re reading.
- Tell someone – out loud – that you’re doing it.
Can I answer your question on a future episode?
I have several ways you can submit a question – or an idea for an episode topic:
- Call the dedicated Podcast Voicemail Line: (425) 522-3487
- Shoot me an email: podcast– at – keithferrin.com
- Record a voicemail – up to 90 seconds – at www.speakpipe.com/keithferrin.
- Leave a comment here on this page.
Resource of the Week
Since this entire episode – and the next one – are entirely about resources, there isn’t a separate Resource of the Week.
